NDIS Plan Reviews: How to Advocate for Ongoing OT Support for Your Child

As an NDIS participant, your child will undergo regular plan reviews. These reviews are an opportunity—but also a risk if support needs are not clearly communicated. Many families are unsure how to prepare for reviews or what documentation is needed to retain essential therapy.

Why Ongoing OT May Be Required:

  • Your child’s functional needs are ongoing (e.g., self-care, behaviour, learning)

  • Developmental goals are still being addressed

  • Supports like sensory regulation, school-readiness, or social skills need continuity

What Can Go Wrong in Plan Reviews:

  • Therapy goals do not get linked to functional improvements

  • Lack of therapist reports or measurable progress

  • Generic language in plan requests

  • No collaboration with school or other providers

OT’s Role in Plan Reviews

At Youth OT, we assist with:

  • Detailed progress reports tied to your child’s goals

  • Functional assessments aligned with NDIS criteria

  • Clear recommendations for the next 6–12 months

  • Parent-friendly language to explain the importance of supports

What Parents Can Do:

  • Keep a journal of daily challenges (e.g., meltdowns, toileting struggles)

  • Request teacher feedback on attention, social, or learning issues

  • Ask your therapist to update goals and track achievements

  • Be specific in your plan review meeting: "We need OT support to continue working on toileting, classroom regulation, and meal preparation."

Documentation That Helps:

  • Therapy progress reports

  • School letters

  • Paediatrician or psychologist recommendations

  • Video or anecdotal evidence from home routines

  • Parent/Carer Impact Statement
